10,000 trees for CostAlegre

Trees are Life

Reforestation of degraded areas is a challenge that may seem impossible to tackle. It is a multi-generational project that will be made more difficult by climate change, illegal logging, ongoing slash-and-burn clearing of land for cattle ranching, and last but not least, a lack of capacity to undertake a replanting campaign on a massive scale. The solutions to these problems are complex; they run deep into societal dynamics, livelihoods, and illegal activities. We will not be able to change all of those elements at once, but one thing is sure, the best time to start addressing what we can change, is today. The sooner we begin, the better the chances that species can recover and that land can be protected from erosion. In the process, we can raise awareness and learn how to cooperate most effectively, across the many stakeholders, the municipal and national agencies, and the supporters that will help us power up the capacity to reforest.

A symbol of unity

This goal will only be achieved by collaboration and shared ambition. We share this project with important partners on this coast, each bringing knowledge, enthusiasm, volunteers, and muscle power to the cause. Planting trees is one way everyone can get involved in a hands-on way.

Planting 100 trees per kilometer of our envisioned 100km CostAlegre Blue/Green region will be a task we can collectively pursue, one small step at a time. It will be a symbol of a united goal that everyone desires for this coast, no matter what the economic background may be. While the long-term goal must be to plant hundreds of thousands of trees, starting with 10,000 will get us moving in the right direction.

The goal of a lifetime

In our effort to find partners in this endeavor, we visited the La Huerta Intermunicipal Nursery. The staff share our vision and are keen to increase the germination and growing of seedlings. Jose Manuel Muñoz works at the La Huerta Municipal Nursery. He has an immense passion for growing and planting trees. So far, he has helped grow and plant more than 1 million trees. His goal is to reach 2 million in his lifetime.

Other nurseries in the region are now joining in to help raise trees for future planting efforts. The nursery at the Xyanya project on the coast has produced some of the strongest and biggest young trees, due to their excellent soil and care by the staff. This can make a big difference in how fast the seedlings will grow. See the image below to see the comparison between trees of the same age, with the larger ones having been given perfect conditions to thrive in.
