Xola-Paraman Lagoon

Hydrology and Restoration

In this lagoon system, we are faced with multiple challenges. The water levels are seasonally extremely low and the connection to the sea does not happen as frequently as it used to, due to the siltation of the lagoon and a lack of freshwater contribution. The water that reaches the lagoon is polluted due to agricultural runoff and failing water treatment systems in the surrounding villages. The Paraman estuary is home to many bird and fish species; restoration is critical to avoid losing this important ecosystem.

The Sierra A Mar team is modeling a range of intervention options and their consequences. They are also working with fishermen from Campo Acosta to map the tributary streams.

Salt Farming

During the dry season, this lagoon holds vast fields where salt is harvested. The team is currently observing and learning where the harvesting and marketing of the salt could be improved, to achieve an even higher quality product and income potential. All this needs to be seen in the context of an overall restoration plan of the lagoon because, without a healthy estuary, none of these functions can be sustained in the years to come. Due to its beauty and great bird-watching potential, there are also great eco-tourism opportunities that can be developed.
