Understanding the hydrology of the region

Four river basins at the heart of CostAlegre

This region of Jalisco is characterized by four major rivers that have their sources high in the mountains before crossing through farmlands and forests in the municipalities of CostAlegre, until they eventually reach the coast. They are the main source of water for all communities, farming, ranching, and coastal tourism developments. Unfortunately, they are also the catchment basins for land and water pollution caused by poorly managed and malfunctioning water treatment facilities, or direct runoff. Land pollution such as trash, chemicals, and soil erosion further burden the rivers, and, as a consequence, the estuaries and near-shore reefs.

Much can be done to address these issues, from infrastructure improvements to changes in farming practices. We are working on a multi-layered approach to understand the dynamics and challenges of each watershed and then develop restoration strategies in collaboration with land users, researchers, government agencies, and NGOs.

Jicosur partnership

Jicosur is a regional agency that advises the Jalisco State government on the recovery, preservation, and improvement of the environment of the southern part of Jalisco, focusing on solving environmental problems and planning sustainable development. Jicosure is recognized locally, nationally, and internationally as a vanguard organization that strives to improve regulations that ensure conservation and better management of natural resources.

We feel extremely fortunate to collaborate with the experts at Jicosur in all of our restoration and conservation projects.
